Glycolic Facial - Could it be right for you?

Glycolic peels are the mildest of facial peels, peeling off the top most layers of the skin. This type of peel is appropriate if you have mild sun damage, enlarged pores or beginning signs of wrinkles. Ultimately, this procedure minimizes fine lines; smoothes out dry, rough skin, reduces pore size, and corrects the texture of sun damaged skin. When mixed with a bleaching agent, these peels can even help improve age spots and erase blotchiness. A trained professional should always perform these chemical peels.

Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid naturally found in sugar cane. It works by deeply penetrating the skin's surface and sloughing the top layer of dull, damaged skin cells. Improvements include reduction of blemishes, control of excess soil, smoother skin texture and tone, and diminished fine lines and wrinkles.

One of the most popular methods of banishing deep-set wrinkles while rejuvenating your skin is the chemical peel. It simply involves the application of a liquid prepping solution, to free your skin of oil and dirt, and then the application of the glycolic peel gel.

As part of the natural hea.ling process, the chemical peeled skin is eventually replaced with new, rejuvenated, smoother layer of skin. Depending on the strength of the chemical peel solution, collagen in the dermis is also regenerated which will make your skin appear tighter and more youthful.

Pre-Glycolic Chemical Peel Instructions

Avoid using clay masks, scrubs or exfoliating agents for at least 48 hours prior to each treatment.
Do not use Retin-A or any similar Vitamin A compound for at least 48 hours prior to each treatment, unless directed.
Do not use self-tanning agents for at least 48 hours prior to each treatment.
Delay the peel procedure if you have a breakout of cold sores, fever blisters or herpes anywhere on the face prior to treatment or if your skin is sunburned.
Avoid facial waxing for 48 hours prior to treatment.
These procedures cannot be done if you are taking Accutane.

Post-Peel Instructions

Generally, makeup can be applied immediately after treatment.
Avoid exercise for at least a few hours after each procedure.
Avoid direct sun exposure. A sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher should be used daily throughout the Glycolic Acid treatment program.
Wait one day after each procedure before resuming the glycolic acid based home care products. Patients experiencing irritation should not resume use of glycolic acid home care products until skin has normalized.
Do not use Retin-A or any similar Vitamin A compound for at least 48 hours after the procedure, unless directed.
Immediately after the peel, it is not uncommon for the patient to experience temporary skin dehydration ranging from mild dryness to slight crusting. In addition, some temporary discoloration may occur.
Facial hair should not be waxed for at least 48 hours after treatment.

It is a southern tradition to eat black eyed peas for luck and greens for money on New Year's Day. Every year I practically pinch my nose and eat every bite of my black eyed peas. I pan fry some sweet cornbread and devore my greens with a little touch of hot sauce. Throw in some baked ham, potatoe salad and green bean casserole and my new year starts off just right.

Tips for an Even Complexion

While freckles tend to develop in people with fair skin, red or blond hair and blue or green eyes, age spots happen later in life regardless of skin type. But both are caused by an accumulation of melanin in the skin, the pigment that makes us tan. Both will also likely darken in the summer with sun exposure and fade in the winter months.

A prevention plan is the best way to avoid these unsightly spots. Use a sunblock with a least a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 as part of your daily skin care regimen. I personally recommend a product with an SPF of 25. In the last two years this has also become the recommendation of the Skin Cancer Foundation. Wear protective clothing when you are outside for long periods of time. There are many light-weight, breathable materials now that make this possible without being to hot. Age spots will concentrate on your back, back of your hands and your face, so be sure to protect all those areas with a combination of sunblock and protective wear. When you begin to see age spots, there are many non-invasive ways to minimize their appearance.

You can naturally lighten with lemon juice. Use it twice a day, it will help fade the age spots and freckles. Apply the lemon juice to a cotton ball or sterile gauze, apply to skin and seal it in with your sunblock or moisturizer.

Exfoliation is also a great way to minimize these spots. Human skin is constantly sloughing off dead skin cells as new ones are produced. With aging skin, it tends to loose it's ability to eliminate these skin cells, causing a clogging of the pores, flaking and ashy skin tone (we'll talk more about these problems in another post). Alpha Hydroxy acid (AHA) looses then glue that holds the old skin cells in place. When used regularly, AHA helps eliminate cells and excess melanin.

We offer several AHA purifying masks at The Posh Daisy. After determining what results you would like to have, your skin density, level of water, oil and layers of dead skin cells you have; we will recommend one of AHA purifying masks. This is a simple, inexpensive ($10) add on to our Signature Gerbera facial or any of our microdermabrasion treatments.

Vitamin C is a natural lightener. Taking a Vitamin C supplement helps reduce the skin's sensitivity to the sun and can help prevent melanin build up.

The Posh Daisy also offers Vascutouch. This is a a wonder treatment at eliminating age spots, freckles, skin tags and spider veins. It is the use of a very low voltage of RF (radio frequency) and DC (direct current) to electronically coagulate (clot and seal) the area that is leaking under the skin without damaging health skin cells. This procedure is very effective in eliminating these problems.

Lavender - An Essential Oil for Fundamental Health

Lavender essential oil is a one-stop medicine chest, helping to reduce anxiety, fatigue and stress and balance hormones, increase eh immune response, lower blood pressure, and relive pain. To utilize lavender's healing benefits at home mix five to 10 ounces of jojoba oil (found locally in Fort Walton Beach at The Golden Almond Health Food store) or unscented lotion. (Essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin; it's best to partner them with a carrier oil, liquid or lotion.)

EARACHES
For earaches, dab one drop of lavender oil massage behind ear and rub gently. Alternatively, place one drop of oil on a cotton ball and carefully place inside the outer ear.

HEADACHES
Inhaling lavender is also effective fore headache relief. Add a few drops to a bowl of warm water and breathe. Gently rub lavender massage lotion on the temples, forehead and base of neck.

COLDS
Lavender oil can also help break up coughs and clear up sinuses. A Colorado based holistic aromatherapist, Nicola McGill, suggests the regular home use of antiseptic essential oils such as lavender to help avoid colds and other infectious disease. Add a few drops to a vaporizer to help clear colds and infuse the home with a lavender scent.

STRESS
At night, six to eightdrops of lavender add to a warm bath helps melt away stress and relieve fatigue. Blend into a foot bath before sinking your feet in and relax. For help inducing sleep, add two or three drops to the underside of your pillow. I personally, like to apply it an inexpensive piece of felt and insert it into my pillow. The oil shouldn't stain, but in the past I have found that some will. The will save your pillow from staining.

A Dream Becomes A Goal

One of the amazing things we have been given as humans is the unquenchable desire to have dreams of a better life, and the ability to establish goals to live out those dreams. Think of it: We can look deep within our hearts and dream of a better situation for ourselves and our families; dream of better financial lives and better emotional or physical lives; certainly dream of better spiritual lives. But what makes this even more powerful is that we have also been given the ability to not only dream but to pursue those dreams and not only to pursue them, but the cognitive ability to actually lay out a plan and strategies (setting goals) to achieve those dreams. Powerful!
What are your dreams and goals? This isn’t what you already have or what you have done, but what you want. Have you ever really sat down and thought through your life values and decided what you really want? Have you ever taken the time to truly reflect, to listen quietly to your heart, to see what dreams live within you? Your dreams are there. Everyone has them. They may live right on the surface, or they may be buried deep from years of others telling you they were foolish, but they are there.

So how do we know what our dreams are? This is an interesting process and it relates primarily to the art of listening. This is not listening to others; it is listening to yourself. If we listen to others, we hear their plans and dreams (and many will try to put their plans and dreams on us). If we listen to others, we can never be fulfilled. We will only chase elusive dreams that are not rooted deep within us. No, we must listen to our own hearts.
Let’s take a look at some practical steps/thoughts on hearing from our hearts on what our dreams are:
Take time to be quiet. This is something that we don’t do enough in this busy world of ours. We rush, rush, rush, and we are constantly listening to noise all around us. The human heart was meant for times of quiet, to peer deep within. It is when we do this that our hearts are set free to soar and take flight on the wings of our own dreams! Schedule some quiet “dream time” this week. No other people. No cell phone. No computer. Just you, a pad, a pen, and your thoughts.

Think about what really thrills you. When you are quiet, think about those things that really get your blood moving. What would you LOVE to do, either for fun or for a living? What would you love to accomplish? What would you try if you were guaranteed to succeed? What big thoughts move your heart into a state of excitement and joy? When you answer these questions you will feel great and you will be in the “dream zone.” It is only when we get to this point that we experience what our dreams are!

Write down all of your dreams as you have them. Don’t think of any as too outlandish or foolish. Remember, you’re dreaming! Let the thoughts fly and take careful record.

Now, prioritize those dreams. Which are most important? Which are most feasible? Which would you love to do the most? Put them in the order in which you will actually try to attain them. Remember, we are always moving toward action, not just dreaming.

Here is the big picture: Life is too short to not pursue your dreams. Someday your life will near its end and all you will be able to do is look backward. You can reflect with joy or regret. Those who dream, who set goals and act on them to live out their dreams, are those who live lives of joy and have a sense of peace when they near the end of their lives. They have finished well, for themselves and for their families.

Remember: These are the dreams and goals that are born out of your heart and mind. These are the goals that are unique to you and come from who you were created to be and gifted to become. Your specific goals are what you want to attain because they are what will make your life joyful and bring your family’s life into congruence with what you want it to be.

Aging Gracefully

Aging gracefully can be challenging if you have bad genes, spend to much time in the sun or smoke to much. If you look at pampering your skin, hair and nails as an enjoyable, gratifying ritual; you will begin to stop thinking of a trip to the spa /salon as practical efficiency. You will start to feel your confidence level increase as your appearance changes for the positive.

I recommend that you keep things natural. Less is more. Heavy make-up can emphasize your pores and wrinkles. A light blush across the apples of the cheeks, a touch of lip gloss and some mascara with a natural eye color can keep your look fresh.

Never use soap on the face. Intead chose a gentle cleansing lotion and hydrating creams. Maturing skin tip: use a makeup sponge once a week when you cleanse your face. It is perfect for sloughing off dead skin without tugging mature skin which can cause excessive drooping.

Rinse with cold water after cleansing. Cold water rinses improve circulation and oxygenate the skin.
Although this doesn't pertain directly to skin, think sexy! Wear dresses, tasteful jewelry is a necessity, fantastic shoes or boots and purse makes your stand tall and feel fantastic.

How We Came to Our Name

We have a great staff here at The Posh Daisy Salon & Aesthetics. We are a full service salon and aesthetic center located in Downtown Fort Walton Beach in the Publix shopping center at the base of the Brooks Bridge.

Many years ago I friend and photographer gave me an orange gerber daisy. She said that to give someone an orange gerber daisy meant that you saw their inner beauty. At the time, I thought how appropriate for a photographer to give an orange gerber daisy to people. I still have that gerber daisy (it was silk :-)).

Not long after I decided to return to school for my aestheticians license, I was sitting in my home office looking at that daisy. It's long slender stem, it's bright orange petals and I remembered what she told me about giving someone an orange gerber daisy. I knew from that moment on I would use the orange daisy as my symbol for my business. I too see the inner beauty in someone when I meet them. Whether I ever see them as a client or not. The more I looked at that daisy, the more I wondered how to describe it's spendid beauty with a single word. That is where "posh" came to mind.

To me 'posh' meant expensive, exclusive or elegant. When I began researching the origins of 'posh' I found that is was a nautical term. It means Portside Out, Starboard Home. When the QE2 came across the Atlantic, if you had enough money, your luggage was tagged 'posh' because you would change cabins so that the sun didn't stream in during your journey. Fort Walton Beach is located on the Gulf of Mexico. How appropriate to have 'posh' as part of my name.

And that is how 'The Posh Daisy' got it's name. Our salon is done in a soothing green, with accents of orange, natural wood and black. It was later discovered that this color scheme was total feng shui. Green reprents the earth and calm. The orange is energy. Black represents strength. Natural wood represents growth and harmony.

We want you to be comfortable and relax while in the salon, but feel as though you are at a friend's place whenever you are visiting with us.
